Some people are proud (and they should be) that they can say “hello” or “thank you” in dozens of languages. I want to learn the phrase “Life is beautiful!” in as many languages as possible!
I think it’s a fantastic thing to know in other languages, much nicer than just “Good afternoon” or so.
I will post all the phrases here including:
1. The writing in the original script
2. An English transcription (to also approximate the pronunciation “in English”) (or in the international phonetic alphabet)
3. An audio recording by a native speaker.
I would deeply appreciate it, if you could record this sentence in your native language (if it’s not listed already) and send it to me in some standard sound file format. Please also try to include the phrase in its original characters and, if possible, an English transcription. Send it all to ingmarweber at gmail dot com
If you’re in EPFL, I’d love to record your voice directly. Otherwise, under Windows you’ll find a recorder here: Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Entertainment -> Sound Recorder
I would also be more than happy to post different dialects/accents, such as Swiss German (or even variants thereof) and Saarlandian or American English (or even variants) and British English. I will make the start by putting it in high-German.
Feel free to help me out by sending links to this blog entry to friends of yours. Oh, and check my spelling in the list below.
Life is beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!
PS: I also found some written forms here, here, here and here. Sarunas cleverly pointed out that one can also use the title of the Wikipedia page for the film in other languages!
PPS: Many of the languages below cause some strange effects when rendered on the screen, e.g., “swallowing” whitespaces or changing their own script size. That’s why the layout below is a bit mingled up.

Wow! Also very, very beautiful!!
But reciting Le petit prince in 100 languages or printing it on a t-shirt would currently be too difficult for me.

“Cuộc sống tươi đẹp!”
This is what we Vietnamese say to imply “Life is beautiful!”
I’m going to send you a sound record for this phrase soon.

Thanks Bob!
Feel free to forward it to friends who speak “strange” languages … and I don’t mean that they are speaking in tongues.

I guess all people to whom this is relevant know this service already. But Google’s transliteration site for Indic languages (http://www.google.com/transliterate/indic/) was new to me.

English Transcription vs. IPA
I’m unsure, whether the International Phonetic Alphabet (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Phonetic_Alphabet) is more appropriate than an approximation in written “English”.
Of course, English is horribly bad for transcription (“cough” is very different from “bough”, or the “ea” in “dead” and in “meat”), but it might still be more appropriate to allow a layperson to have a go at pronouncing Urdu, without studying the IPA first.
Let me know if you have any thoughts. Maybe it’s best to simply have both. And, of course, an audio recording!
To test any particular transcription (to see how it would sound “in English”) have a look at this tool:

More on IPA
If you have a dictionary at hand, then it would also be great if you could look up the transcription in the International Phonetic Alphabet. It is usually given for each word (but not for each declined/conjugated form). See the Greek above for an example.
To “type” these letters/characters, you can use this tool:
http://linguiste.org/phonetics/ipa/chart/keyboard/
This way any “linguist” can correctly pronounce your script, even without an audio file.

A useful site for character conversion:
http://coderstoolbox.net/string/
If you have something like:
& #1575; & #1604; & #1581; & #1610; & #1575; & #1577; & #1581; & #1604; & #1608; & #1577;
[I had to insert some whitespace to avoid the automatic correct rendering ... in the source code it looks very "non-arabic" in plain unicode.]
It will convert it to:
الحياة حلوة
[This really looks arabic in the source code.]

Kannan
Tajik? I’m pretty sure that that is Tamil.

Thanks Kannan!!
I misinterpreted the “ta” in the wikipedia as Tajik. But, indeed, it is Tamil!
Would you have contacts to get an audio recording? Or at least a transcription?
Thanks!
